Mark your calendar for Nov. 12-14 as Marathon High School will present the “Addam’s Family Musical.”
If you would like to donate to the project, we are currently looking for light colored or white fabric sheets or curtains that can be dyed for costumes. Any sewing notions are always welcome as we have a number of costumes to design and build. Items can be delivered to the Marathon High School office.
Volunteers are needed to help with cutting, sewing and altering costumes. If interested, contact Connie Stieber at 715-370-0519 after 3 pm.
Youth awards
Marathon youth were recognized during an awards night held Sept. 4 during Fun Days.
The night started off with the singing of the National Anthem by Marathon High School senior McKinley Marks. Emcee Ron Kunkel, who runs the boys youth baseball program, thanked people that help with the youth programs in town and those that sponsor teams.
The first individuals that were recognized were all the umpires who refereed games for youth baseball/softball leagues. The boys game umpires included Cody Radtke, Blake Kraft, Logan Peters, Quillan Kunkel, Blake Underwood, Cale Quaintance, Reed McCain, Evan DeBroux, Alex Poppe, Owen Chrouser and Matt Annis. The girls’ softball umpires were Jody Davis, Bridget Salber, Ripley Skrzypchak, Allison Podjaski, Jacob Plachetka and Levi Kraut- kramer.
T-ball coordinator Connie Stieber, announced the t-ball teams and sponsors for the season, as well as thanking those that were all involved.
Ron Kunkel presented Jerry Seubert and Dale Braunel with the “Years of Service” award for their dedication and commitment to the Youth Baseball and Softball Program in Marathon. The first youth awards that were presented were sportsmanship awards. These awards are selected by the coaches of each league and they go to the current fourth and seventh grade players only. This year’s girls sportsmanship awards went to the following players: Fourth grade girls: Madelyn Jensen, Anya Jacobson and Abby Brickner.
Seventh grade girls: Sophia Conn, Allison Podjaski, Ava Ott, Ripley Skrzypchak, Morgan Sorge and Aubrey Fieri.
Fourth grade boys: Eddie Patten, Dylan Freund, Dane Kraft, Brandon Schroder and Dane Heise.
Seventh grade boys: Ean Shuda, Quillan Kunkel, Owen Chrouser, Landon Hilgart and Fred Tylinski.
Ron Kunkel and Marathon wrestling coach Kraig Underwood welcomed guest speaker, Wisconsin Badger and fourtime Wisconsin state wrestling champion Jeremy Schoenherr.
Kunkel recognized state participant youth wrestlers, including youngsters who placed at state: Reed McCain 150 pounds, fifth place; and Blake Underwood, 80 pounds, second place. He recognized youth wrestlers who placed in the Corn Cob Nationals Tournament in Iowa: Cale Quaintance, 85 pounds, third; Reed McCain, 150 pounds, second; Blake Underwood, 80 pounds, second; Jared Sweno, 138 pounds, second. Blake Underwood was also recognized for his second place finish at the Wisconsin Wrestling League State Tournament and for being named two-time All-American Youth Wrestler. Jared Sweno was recognized for his high school state tournament appearance this past year at 132 pounds.
Brock Warren was recognized for being the boys high school basketball Academic All-State Team while teammate Jaden Koeller was recognized for being a Channel-7 All-Star.
Julianna Thurs was recognized for taking 28th place in last season’s high school state cross country meet.
Last year’s high school state track participants were also recognized.
Hope Krautkramer: eighth place place shot put and tenth place discus.
Michael Kindlarski: ninth place 110 meter hurdles.
Brett Gertschen: tenth place discus and fourteenth place shot put.
Griffin Treankler: fourteenth place 300 meter hurdles.
Jared Sweno, Matt Vande Boom, Sam Dick and Matt Annis: eighth place 4x100 meter relay.
Drake Carlson: fourth place 100M wheelchair, fourth place 400M wheelchair, second place 1600 meter wheelchair and fourth place shot put wheelchair.
Last year’s high school state golf team was recognized including Noah Gage, Ben Robbins, Alex Pawlowicz, John Stoffel and Dylan Dodson.
Lindsey Pintor was recognized for participating in the Wisconsin Softball Senior All-Star Game.
The Marathon High School Boys baseball team was recognized for WIAA and American Legion state tournaments. Team members recognized were Brock Warren, Jake Sweno, Mike Hahn, Nathan Hanke, Kyle Hollenbeck, Jaden Koeller, Pierson Hamann, Daniel LaQua, Peter Chesek, Hector Pintor, Logan Werner, Grant Warren, Cooper Hoeksema, Jorey Kunkel, Tyler Underwood, Clayton Marcott, Casey Hollenbeck, Jake Lepak, Derek Vesely and Jeffrey Deininger. Brock Warren was recognized for being first team All-District Utility Player, first team All-District Academic Team, All-State Honorable Mention and for playing in both the Wisconsin Baseball Senior All-Star Game and the American Legion All-Star Game, where his father, Steve Warren, head Marathon baseball coach, was selected as an assistant coach for the game.
Junior high state track participants were recognized. They included Aidan Hale, Fred Tylinski, Brady Annis, Cody Radtke and Anika Kolka.
That morning, Ron Kunkel ran the Marathon Youth Football Skills Competition for girls and boys ages 6-14. The competition includes punting, passing, kicking and a timed obstacle course. The participants with the ten fastest times in the obstacle course were: 1, Logan Witberler; 2, Ean Shuda; 3, Langdon Hilgart; 4, Drew Woelfel; 5, Sawyer Berens; 6, Quillan Kunkel; 7, Braxton Kilty; 8, Tage Sigert; 9, Jonathan Small, 10, Nathan Schroder.
Youth that placed for overall scores in the football skills competition were: Girls 6-8: 1, Katelyn Witberler; 2, Natalie Schroder; 3, Macie Oelhafen.
Boys 6-8: 1, Grayson Rennie; 2, Eli Trowbridge; 3, 3, Teagon Vang.
Girls 9-10: 1, Anya Jacobson; 2, Kamrie Myszka; 3, Skylar Robbins.
Boys 9-10: 1, Brayson Schneider; 2, Braxton Kilty; 3, Konnor Kilinski.
Girls 11-12: 1, Maycie Myszka.
Boys 11-12: 1, Tage Siegert; 2, Landon Hilgart; 3, Logan Peters.
Girls 12-14: 1, Kierta Siegert.
Boys 12-14: 1, Drew Woefel; 2, Logan Witberler; 3, Mason Heise.
The following awards were presented to fourth and seventh grade baseball and softball players for hitting, fielding, throwing and running skills.

Seventh grade boys: 1, Logan Peters; 2, Quillan Kunkel; 3, Darrin Vesely and Landon Hilgert (tied).
Ron Kunkel then announced that he was stepping down as the Boys City League coordinator and will be replaced by Tony Podjaski who is stepping down as the Girls City League Coordinator and being replaced by Jared Seubert.
School planning
The School District of Marathon will soon begin a strategic planning initiative.
The school board is seeking to compile a list of interested district/community stakeholders for this process. If you would be interested in being considered for this committee work, email administrator Rick Parks at (rparks@marathon.k12.wi.us). Indicate interest by Friday, Sept.17.
The dates of the strategic planning will be Friday, Oct. 1, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 2, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 12, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 13, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Chicken dinner
St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Marathon, will sponsor a charcoal chicken dinner on Sunday, Sept. 26, in the school hall. Serving will be between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The chicken will be served with mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing and homemade pie. Carryouts will be available.
Alumni welcome
Marathon High School band alumni are welcome to join this year’s school pep band. The band is scheduled to play during home volleyball and football events.
Marathon High School will provide the music. Community members need to provide their own instruments with the exception of drums.

Field trip
Fourth grade students at St. Mary’s School, Marathon, will take a field trip to the Little Red Schoolhouse at Marathon Park, Wausau, on Friday, Sept. 17.
Little treasure
The Marathon City Branch Public Library will offer “little treasure” kits to create a cute, sweet-smelling lavender sachet during the month of September.
The library will provide you with supplies and instructions to make your own sachet that makes a great gift left under a pillow for sweet dreams or kept in a drawer to keep away moths and the contents smelling nice.
Pack 458
The Marathon Cub Scouts Pack 458 will have a membership meeting Thursday, Sept. 16, 6 p.m. in the St. Mary’s cafeteria. The pack is open to both boys and girls. For more information, call Jennifer Kindlarski, 715323-4802.
Fall clean-up
The Village of Marathon City will hold a fall clean-up on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 8 a.m., to 10 a.m. at Veterans Park.
The village will accept trash for $25 per load. For an additional fee, the village will accept car tires, truck tires, tractor tires, washing machines, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, microwaves, furnaces, water heaters, humidifiers, freezers, refrigerators, window air conditions, dehumidifiers and television sets.
The village will not accept laptops, printers, hard drives, computer monitors, yard waste, toxic materials and building materials.
The fall clean-up is for Marathon City residents only. Identification will be required.
Farmers market
A farmers market will be held the third Saturday of each month through October 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rib Falls Town Hall. For more information, call 715-574-6691.
