S-C Rockets lose 38-0 at Colby
After piling up 51 points in a seasonopening win against Glenwood City on Aug. 20, the Spencer-Columbus football team found its offense to be considerably less potent against a conference foe. Colby almost completely shut the Rockets down, limiting them to 45 total yards of total offense in a 38-0 win on Aug. 27 in Colby.
A ground game that broke several long runs against the Glenwood City defense was stymied by the Hornets. Spencer-Columbus ran 31 times, but for less than a half-yard per carry (12 total yards). The Rockets passed five times with three completions for 33 yards, but that was not nearly enough.
Colby built a 16-0 first-quarter lead as Caden Healy scored on runs of 14 yards and one yard. The Hornets added a 14-yard Brent Jeske run in the second quarter and then Jeske found Brody Decker for a 10-yard touchdown pass to make it 32-0 at the half.
Colby did not have huge offensive numbers against the Rocket defense. The Hornets ran 41 times for 221 yards, with Jeske getting 84 yards on 12 carries and Mason Voss adding 72 yards on 12 attempts.
Jeske was 3-6 through the air for 30 yards.
Spencer-Columbus head coach Jason Gorst said the game showed his team has a lot on which to work to compete with the league favorites.
“We tip our caps to Colby as they certainly proved they are one of the best teams in the state,” Gorst said. “They are very physical and well-coached and their players played hard and with class. We were proud of the effort our guys put forth, but we have to continue to work to become a better football team. We will learn from the mistakes we made and quickly move on to our next opponent. Our goal remains the same to be a better team at season’s end than we are right now. “
