Mildred Viets
Mildred “Millie” M. Viets, age 99, of Colby, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2021, at the Colby Retirement Community under the tender care of hospice.
A memorial service was held on Monday, Aug. 16, 2021, at 1 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Abbotsford. Rev. Donald Bruce presided. Family and friends were welcomed from 11 a.m. until the time of the service Monday at the church. A celebratory gathering followed at the Lions Shelter in Colby from 2:30-6 p.m. Family and friends could watch the service live on the Maurina Schilling Funeral Home Facebook page or after the service anytime on Facebook or the website. The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Colby is entrusted with the arrangements.
Millie was born on April 12, 1922, the daughter of Frank and Ida (Stein) Specht in Iola. She was united in marriage to Elden Viets on September 24, 1939, in Clintonville. He preceded her in death on April 4, 1997.
Millie and Elden operated taverns in the local area, including Ipson’s Bar and Kalepp’s Bar in Abbotsford and the Dug-Out in Colby. Since 1968, they owned and operated the Airport Bar in Colby. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church. Millie enjoyed bowling, shooting pool, crocheting, knitting, music and dancing. Most importantly, she loved and cherished her family. Millie is survived by her four children: Jay (Mary) Viets of Superior, Dennis (Joyce) Viets of Pensacola, Fla., Debra Montgomery of Colby and Gary (Kathy) Viets of Colby; 11 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and her companion, Foxy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elden; an infant son, Gerald; a granddaughter, Kelsey Viets; a grandson, Jeff Viets; a son-in-law, Robert Montgomery; three brothers and one sister: Claude, Gordon, Melvin and Mary.
