Redmen announce 2021 team awards

Rib Lake head baseball coach Dick Iverson announced his squad’s 2021 team awards, which were presented in a team gathering last week. Most awards are voted on by both coaches and players.
The awards follow a 12-8 season that included a co-championship in the Marawood North. At 8-2, the Redmen shared the league title with Athens and Abbotsford- Colby and advanced to the WIAA Division 4 regional final round.
Senior Carter Scheithauer won the Most Valuable Player award and also the Lowest Earned Run Average award among pitchers. He went 7-1 this season with a 1.56 earned run average and threw a no-hitter against Auburndale on April 30.
Scheithauer also received All-District honorable mention from the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association.
The Hustle Award was shared by senior Brock Thiede and junior Jordan Yanko. Yanko also won the Most Runs Batted In award with 17 in 20 games played.
Thiede, Yanko and Scheithauer were all unanimous first-team All-Marawood North picks as well.
Freshman Andrew Wudi earned the award for Highest Batting Average at .345. He was 10 for 29 overall at the plate this season and drew 10 walks. Wudi also was voted the team’s Most Improved Player.
Sophomore Michael Borchardt, the team’s primary catcher as well as an infi elder and pitcher, earned the Best Defense award.
This year’s captains were the team’s only seniors –– Scheithauer, Thiede and Ryan Patrick. Seniors in 2022, Logan Blomberg and Sam Gumz, were voted in as team captains for next spring.
“Thank you to everybody who helped out this season,” said Iverson, the Marawood North’s 2021 Coach of the Year. “It was a different year. For us, as inexperienced as we were to start the season, we were pretty pleased with the results. We lose three good seniors, but we have a lot of guys coming back. We got a lot of games in, about 22, with our Legion schedule, which was good. Our younger guys who didn’t play a lot, got a lot of time this summer.”
