Medford puts two on state Legion All-Tournament team


Medford’s Seth Mudgett and Logan Baumgartner were named to the 2021 Wisconsin American Legion Class AA All-Tournament team based on their efforts at the state event held July 30-Aug. 3 in Antigo.
Mudgett and Baumgartner helped Medford go 1-2 in the double-elimination tournament. Post 147 beat Waupaca 11-3 and lost 6-1 to Ahnapee and 9-0 to host and eventual tournament runner-up Antigo.
Mudgett was the winning pitcher against Waupaca. In six innings, he allowed nine hits, three earned runs and four walks while striking out three. As the leadoff hitter in Medford’s lineup, he went four for 11 over the weekend with four runs scored and one driven in.
Mudgett, the team’s centerfielder in its two losses, was three for five against Waupaca with a double, the RBI and three runs scored. He had a hit and scored Medford’s only run in its opening loss to Ahnapee on July 30.
Baumgartner, unfortunately, took both pitching losses while starting the games against Ahnapee and Antigo. He pitched well against Antigo. In six innings, he allowed five runs, but just two were earned, and eight hits. He struck out three, walked one and hit one. He went 2.2 innings against Ahnapee, allowing seven hits and five earned runs while striking out three.
At the plate, Baumgartner was two for 10. He drove in three runs, with two coming on a late double, in the win over Waupaca. He scored twice in that game.
He also had a hit in the Antigo game. Baumgartner was solid defensively at shortstop when he wasn’t pitching.
In all, 20 players were chosen for the All-Tournament team from the eight qualifying teams.
Kaukauna’s Matthew Bartel was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after leading his team to the state championship. He was joined by teammates Jordan Van Kauwenberg, Owen Marsau and Zander Hieptas on the alltourney squad. Antigo’s Logan Thomae was the tournament’s batting champion with a .571 average over five games. He was joined by teammates Eli Fleischman, Will Kubeny and Neil Bretl on the all-tourney team.
Onalaska put Evan Gamoke, Bryce Hoeft and Mason Manglitz on the team. Teddy Norman, Michael Krueger and Jack Gehl were chosen from River Falls. Luke Steebs and Alex Laughlin made it from Ahnapee. Wes Biel of Beaver Dam and Braeden Ryan of Waupaca rounded out the team.
