Final preparations made for Wisconsin Valley Fair

Wausau - Establishment of a fulltime office at the Marathon park has indicated the final stages in the preparations for the 83rd annual Wisconsin Valley Fair here Aug. 7 to 13.

The fair office is now under the full time direction of Sec. Harry A. Kiefer, to receive orders for the advance sale of tickets, and beginning July 25, with the receiving of entries in the livestock and other departments. Entry blanks are available at the fair office or may be secured through the mail by writing the secretary at Post Office Box 755, Wausau.

Despite increasing costs, the admission prices for the grounds and the grand stand attractions remain the same as last year. Special emphasis is being laid this year by fair officials upon the season ticket sale. Season tickets sell for $1.20 and entitle the holder to enter the grounds, day or night, as often as the holder desires, during the extent of the fair.

Activities will open with a preview of the W.G. Wade midway on opening night, Aug. 7. The following day will be entry day with Wausau Day being scheduled for Thursday with the big car races being directed by nationally known Al Sweeny, the junior fair and carnival as chief attractions during the day and the Barnes-Carruthers revue and fireworks, the night attractions. The revue and fireworks will be featured the four big nights of the fair, including the closing Sunday night. Art Swanson’s Thillicade, featuring daredevil drivers in 1951 model cars, will be the afternoon attraction Friday.

Glenn Eichstedt to take Abby basketball reins

The Abbotsford School Board voted unanimously Monday night to hire Glenn Eichstedt as the head varsity boys basketball coach.

Eichstedt had been assistant to former head coach Sam Zier, who quit his post at Abby High School to enter private business. The administration had been attempting to hire a teacher who could handle both math and coaching duties.

The search began in April, but Superintendent Merrill Switzenberg said it had been unsuccessful.

“It’s just very difficult to find an individual with both the qualifications we need,” he said.

Eichstedt had requested appointment to the head coach position last spring, but was told he would have to compete with any other candidates.

Athletic director Don Medenwaldt said over 200 applications were received and three interviews were conducted, but that the process had been fruitless.

Switzenberg said the district is still interviewing for a math/coaching position, and that there is still no recommendation for hiring a math teacher.

Said Abby High School Principal Phil Cassata: “We were directed to hire this best candidate for the (coaching) job. I think we have that candidate in Mr. Eichstedt.”

With that, the board voted unanimously to confirm the recommendation.
