Gilman native earns ‘Wings of Gold’ at Training Air Wing Five

A Gilman, Wisconsin, native, 1st Lt. Mitchell Jazdzewski, completed Advanced Helicopter Flight Training, earning Wings of Gold.
Jazdzewski currently serves as a U.S. Marine helicopter pilot. Since earning Wings of Gold, Jazdzewski has been designated as an unrestricted Naval aviator, selected to fly Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion.
According to Navy Officials, the CH-53E is the Marine Corps’ heavy lift helicopter. It was designed for the transportation of material and supplies and is compatible with most amphibious class ships.
Jazdzewski joined the Marine Corps in 2016 and commissioned as an officer in 2018. “I joined the Marine Corps to serve my country and push myself to be the best person that I can be,” said Jazdzewski.
Jazdzewski, a 2013 Gilman High School graduate and 2017 South Dakota State University graduate, believes the values required to succeed as a Marine are similar to those found in Gilman.
“Growing up, I learned the importance of teamwork,” said Jazdzewski. “During my service, I’ve had the opportunity to serve along the best people this Nation has to offer, while carrying the traditions and legacies others have done before me.”
Though there are many opportunities for Marines to earn recognition in their command, community and careers, Jazdzewski is most proud of becoming a service member.
“Earning the title of ‘Marine’ was a very proud moment,” said Jazdzewski. “Earning my Wings of Gold was very special as well because it was two and a half long years of training and studying.”
As a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, Jazdzewski, as well as all who serve, know they are honoring themselves, each other and our Nation.
“Freedom isn’t free,” added Jazdzewski. “As a Marine, I’ve flown with different instructors and students who come from all over the country. It has exposed me to different cultures and I’ve met great people who have all dedicated their lives to protecting our freedoms.”
