Interwald lights up scoreboard while notching first league win

DAIRYLAND LEAGUE BASEBALL
The Interwald Woodticks broke into the Dairyland League win column in a big way Sunday, scoring early and often to light up Westboro’s new scoreboard in a 15-5, eight-inning win over the Trojans.
Interwald piled up 13 hits, nine of which went for extra bases, off three Westboro pitchers while improving to 1-2 in league play. Zack Iverson fell a double short of the cycle while going three for five with five runs batted in. He scored four runs. Craig Scheithauer tripled and homered while driving in four runs and Matt Mohr hit two doubles and scored three times to lead the Woodticks’ big offensive showing. Iverson was hit by a pitch in the first and scored on Scheithauer’s triple to deep center to start the scoring. Two straight errors preceded Scheithauer’s three-run homer to right in the third that made it 4-0. That blast was answered by a two-run bomb down the leftfield line by Westboro’s Dustin Freeman that cut Interwald’s lead in half. But the Woodticks broke it open with a four-run fourth where all of the damage was done with two outs. Mohr doubled and scored on Iverson’s triple. After Craig Scheithauer was intentionally walked, Carter Scheithauer dropped an RBI double down the rightfield line. Nick Gerstberger’s single knocked in two. Dalton Strebig added an RBI double in the sixth to make it 9-2.
Iverson’s three-run homer in the eighth made it 15-4 before Westboro got one last run in the bottom half.
Matt Krueger went two for three for Westboro with an RBI single in the fifth and a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Freeman was two for three and added a double to his home run. Travis Niemi was two for four with a double.
Pete Devine got the win while throwing seven innings for Interwald. He struck out three, walked three and allowed nine hits and four runs.
Butch Wiegel went four innings for Westboro and took the loss. Brant Johnson covered three innings and Marcus Klemm allowed four runs on three hits and an error in the eighth.
Westboro fell to 1-3 in league play, but the Trojans did unveil their new electronic scoreboard in rightfield, which added to recent field upgrades that include new dugouts.
“We are really excited about two big additions to Trojan Field,” manager Ted Goodrich said. “Our new dugouts were finished the fall before COVID hit and we couldn’t use them last season. We worked for several years to get these and were helped greatly by the Taylor County Power Line Fund. Our new scoreboard was co-sponsored by Tombstone Pizza/ Nestle and Sierra Pacific Windows. We can’t thank them enough for their generosity and support.”
Interwald is back in action Sunday, hosting Merrill in Rib Lake at 1:30 p.m. The Trojans are also home Sunday, fac- ing the Tomahawk Titans at 1:30 p.m.
In other local action, Rib Lake got a second key win in a row, knocking off visiting Marshfield 4-2 on Friday night to improve to 2-3. The Osprey are at Minocqua this Sunday. The Wood Ducks are a surprising 4-1 in league play and sit in a first-place tie with Everest, who they knocked off 5-3 on Sunday.
Whittlesey won a 3-1 pitcher’s duel with Pittsville, while Medford was smoked 19-0 by host Merrill. The Whittlesey at Medford game that appears on the schedule for Saturday has been moved to Sunday, July 18 with a 1:30 p.m. start.
