High placements weren’t easy to get, but the Rib Lake track and field squads were able to post some of their best marks of 2021 at a seven-team meet hosted by Edgar on June 2.

The girls used several top-six finishes to tie Three Lakes-Phelps for fourth place in the team standings with 63 points. They finished ahead of Flambeau (60) and Laona-Wabeno (22). Edgar ran away with first place by scoring 234 points, followed by Wisconsin Rapids Assumption (84) and Abbotsford (72).

Kylee Goodrich contributed to three scoring efforts for Rib Lake. The junior took second place in the 800-meter run in a season-best 2:52.09. She was 1.94 seconds behind Edgar’s Gretchen Brewster, but comfortably ahead of Edgar’s third-place runner, Natalie Thompson (2:57.99). Earlier in the meet, Goodrich placed fourth in the 1,600-meter run at 6:43.02.

Megan Yanko, Lauren Pelnis, Goodrich and Amber Yanko closed out the meet with a second-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay, which was won by Edgar in 4:34.

Pelnis set a personal-best mark of 29 feet, 6.5 inches in the shot put, good for third place behind Emily Fink of Three Lakes-Phelps (45-2) and Sophia Larson of Edgar (33-5.5). Pelnis beat Edgar’s Kyra Anderson by 2 inches and teammate Emma Winter by 2.5 inches. Winter’s throw of 29-4 also was a personal best. Hannah Schuh was 11th at 25-6.5.

Winter set a personal best in the discus with her 10th-place throw of 75-3, while Schuh was 12th at 71-5 and Grace Artz was 20th at 45-6.

Senior Jolee Gehrke took third in the long jump, nudging her personal-best distance up to 13-3.75. She was 2 feet behind winner Morgan Schnelle of Edgar. Rib Lake freshman Olivia Lopez was sixth at 13-0.25. Gehrke added a sixth-place finish in the high jump by clearing 4-6 and she was fifth in the 300-meter low hurdles at 54.36 seconds.

The team of Megan Yanko, Pelnis, Lopez and Amber Yanko lowered its time to 55.66 seconds, good for third in the 400-meter relay behind Edgar (53.82) and Abbotsford (55.64). Haylee Scotty, Ryanna Schrader, Pelnis and Megan Yanko were fifth in the 800-meter relay at 2:10.97.

Lopez got the sixth-place points in the 100-meter dash at 14.43 seconds. Julia Dananay was sixth in the 400-meter dash in an improved time of 1:40.03. Scotty was 14th in the 200-meter dash at 33.34 seconds.

The boys scored 23 points and placed seventh behind Edgar (258), Three Lakes-Phelps (92), Assumption (71), Abbotsford (70), Laona-Wabeno (49) and Flambeau (33).

The 800-meter relay team of Ashton Keiser, Donovan Sutherland, Ethan Keiser and Noah Wiitala was the team’s highest finisher in the meet, taking third in 1:45.72 behind Three Lakes-Phelps (1:36.68) and Edgar (1:37.39). Ashton Keiser, Sutherland, Ben Petersen and Ryan Buehler were fifth in the 1,600-meter relay at 4:04.88 behind Edgar (3:39.39), Three Lakes-Phelps (3:43.86), Assumption (3:44.9) and Laona-Wabeno (4:01.93).

On the track, Buehler took fifth in the 1,600-meter run with a personal-best time of 5:39.06. Petersen was eighth in the 200-meter dash in his best time of 26.82 seconds. Damien Peterson (27.72), Theo Robisch (28.81), Jayden Thums (29.62) and Xavier Johnson (31.39) all set personal-best times while finishing 12th, 15th, 17th and 19th.

Ethan Keiser was 10th in the 100-meter dash at 12.93 seconds, Wiitala was 12th in 13.22 seconds and Peterson was 13th in 13.35 seconds.

Robisch led Rib Lake in the field events. He was sixth in the long jump, hitting 16-3, and eighth in the triple jump at 33-4. Peterson (15-1) was eighth and Ethan Keiser (14-9.5) was 10th in the long jump. Johnson (26-10) was 11th in the triple jump.

Bud Schreiner was 12th in the shot put at 32-7.5 and 13th in the discus at 84-5. Brandon Heiser threw the shot 27-3 for a new personal-best mark and 16th place. He was 16th in the discus at 71-7.
