Elaine was born on February 2, 1931, the daughter of William Sr. and Edna (Scheelk) Haas. She attended rural schools of Pleasant Valley in Stetsonville, Pleasant Hill of Colby and Zion Lutheran School in Colby, where she finished eighth grade before stopping her education to help on the family farm. Elaine was united in marriage to Jerome (Gramps) Schultz on July 23, 1949, at St. Mary’s Parsonage in Colby. He preceded her in death on August 27, 2011. Elaine worked as a waitress, a housekeeper at Zion Lutheran Church and The Colonial House in Colby and cleaner of many houses and businesses, a daycare provider, and worked at a mink farm and helped on the family farm.

Elaine was most noted as an incredible cook and baker, especially her delicious apple slices, apple kuchen and apple pies. Elaine was an avid flower and vegetable gardener. She was a dedicated community volunteer at the Colby Historical Society and Zion Lutheran Sewing Circle. She was very active in homemakers groups and served as the Clark County president at one time. Upon her retirement, Elaine enjoyed reading a good book and appreciated the assistance that the Colby Community Library provided in the selections.
