Curling teams 1-1 at Point; state qualifiers in Medford Thursday, Friday

MEDFORD CURLING

Seemingly as soon as it began, the high school curling regular season reached its conclusion Monday for the Medford Raiders, who earned a split in their games at Stevens Point in their only road trip of the season thus far.

The girls team of Lyza Brandner, Karlee Westrich, Jill Mahner and Anya Apfelbeck improved to 3-2 for the season with a solid 12-4 win over the Panthers.

The boys team of Dalton Casar, Brett Lundy, Alex Wilson and Nathan Willman wasn’t as fortunate as they were shut out by the home team 7-0. The Raiders fell to 2-3.

Medford’s home games with Mosinee, scheduled for last Thursday, were canceled due to the winter storm and won’t be made up.

Now the Raiders enter the post-season, which, like everything else, looks different than it would in a normal season.

Medford and Stevens Point are hosting state-qualifying rounds this week to determine which teams from the state’s Northern Division advance to the Wisconsin State High School Championships in Stevens Point next weekend, Feb. 19-20.

In Medford, boys play will be held today, Thursday, with the Raiders facing Wausau West at 9 a.m. and D.C. Everest at 3 p.m. In between, the Warriors will face the Evergreens at noon. The top team out of those three will advance to state.

Girls play in Medford is set for Friday. The Raiders will take on D.C. Everest at 9 a.m. and Mosinee at 3 p.m. The Indians and Evergreens will square off in the noon game. Again, the top finishing team will go on to state competition.

Boys play at Stevens Point features the host Panthers, Mosinee and Wausau East. Girls play includes Point, Wausau West and Wausau East.

Both of Medford girls losses were handed to them by D.C. Everest by scores of 10-7 and 7-5. The boys split with the Evergreens, losing 8-4 and winning 8-3. West beat the boys 11-1.
