The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest expects a new snowmobile trail to open this winter on the Medford-Park Falls Ranger District. The 13.5-mile trail currently under construction will connect the Taylor County trail system near the Mondeaux Flowage to a Price County system near Steve Creek Flowage.

The new connector trail will offer a shorter route for families and others who aren’t able to make the longer ride required by the current trail system in the area. It will also provide an alternative route between Price County and the Medford area, relieving the busy Pine Line Rail Trail of some traffic.

Hopes and plans for such a connector trail go back decades, yet to this day, there is no snowmobile trail connection between the national forest in Taylor County and trails in Price County. Several years ago, Taylor County forest administrator Jake Walcisak approached the national forest to revitalize the discussions.

“This connector will make it possible for more people to get out and enjoy the trails,” said Walcisak. “As riders explore new territory, area businesses may also benefit from new faces passing through.”

The national forest considered environmental and cultural impacts of this project when it surveyed the area for any conflicts with wildlife habitat, heritage resources, wetland protection and other features. Much of the new connector trail will traverse existing roads and trails, with only short segments added to complete the route.

Members of area snowmobile clubs are already preparing for the work needed to complete and maintain the trail. The forest expects to post signage and build adequate stream crossings for use this winter, and it plans to install more sustainable infrastructure over the summer.
