Prentice 38, Rib Lake 25

Rib Lake did a much better job slowing down Prentice’s Kiandra Hartman this time around and the defense overall was solid in Friday’s final 25 minutes or so. The offense just was unable to capitalize in a 38-25 home loss.

Hartman, who scored 29 points and hit six 3-pointers in Prentice’s 52-38 win on Jan. 4, was held to seven in Friday’s matchup. She was the focus of a box-andone defensive plan for much of the game with Rib Lake’s Nellie Hopkins drawing the main assignment of guarding her.

Hopkins also led Rib Lake in scoring with 12 points.

Prentice got the double-digit lead it would work with for basically the entire night in the first 10 minutes. The Buccaneers got out to a 12-2 start. Then, after a Hopkins hoop, they got a point-blank score from Carissa Harding off a Serena Moore assist and then Hartman got free for a three-point play inside to make it 17-4. Prentice’s lead grew to 24-6 before Lauren Pelnis hit three of four free throws and Hopkins got a score to close the gap to 24-11 at halftime.

Rib Lake scored just three points over the first 14 minutes of the second half and fell behind 36-14 before finishing with a strong 11-2 run that started with what was essentially a six-point possession. Pelnis scored off a steal and was fouled. She missed the free throw, but the rebound went out of bounds off Prentice. Heiser scored on the inbound play and was fouled. Her free throw rimmed out, but, again, Rib Lake got possession on a tie-up. Hopkins drove into the lane and scored to make it 36-20. Pelnis and Hopkins scored late buckets to close the gap even more.

Pelnis finished with seven points, while Heiser and Scheithauer scored three apiece.
