Chiefs slash Bobcats, get raided by Bruce
It wasn’t as hectic a schedule as some weeks, but the Cornell girls basketball squad still faced some tough competition in conference play.
Jan. 26 vs. Birchwood conference (W 60-29)
Taking the trip to Birchwood, the Chiefs showed off their skills, taking a dominating lead.
“They girls played so well together,” said coach Courtney Yanko. “I was very proud of their teamwork on defense in getting stops and steals. They also played very well on offense, passing the ball well.”
As a result, Cornell claimed the victory, 60-29.
Sophomore Kelsea Popp led for the Chiefs, with 20 points, followed closely by junior Teaira Spaeth, who had 19. Seniors Izzy Clark, Michaiah Galster and Alyssa Helland all had 7 points each.
“It really all came together well last night for us,” said Yanko. “We are excited to do it again on Friday, vs. Bruce.”
Jan. 29 vs. Bruce conference (L 50-36)
A few nights later, Cornell acted as host to Bruce, looking for another win to add to their record.
“We came out knowing it was going to be a good game,” said Yanko.
Shots refused to fall for the Chiefs in the match-up and the game went to the Raiders, 50-36.
“We did some great things on the defensive end, but unfortunately, we could not find an answer to guarding their post,” said Yanko.
Popp again led the team, this time with 15 points. Galster came next, with 8 points, with Helland right behind, followed by Clark, with 6. Spaeth rounded things out with 2 points.
Cornell’s record now sits at 3-11 overall and 2-8 in the conference.
