The Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe/ Turtle Lake-Clayton wrestling co-op came up short in an 18-12 dual with Shell Lake and then got in some exhibition matches in a four-team meet held Thursday in Turtle Lake.

There were four contested matches in the dual with the Lakers with each team winning two.

At 170 pounds, Parker Lytle from the Turtle Lake-Clayton side of the co-op earned a 6-0 win over Shell Lake’s Max Elliott. At 126 pounds, Turtle Lake-Clayton’s Mason Quade was a 6-0 winner.

Gilman’s Julian Krizan was a forfeit winner at 182 pounds. Troy Duellman and Braeden Person both lost their matches in close decisions. At 132, Duellman, a freshman, got a second-period reversal to tie his match with senior Tyler Schunck at 2-2, but Schunck got a reversal and late two-point near fall in the third period to win the match 6-3.

At 138, Person, a sophomore, tied his match with senior Cody Swan at 2-2 with a reversal just before the horn sounded to end the first period. Person was unable to escape in the second. He was in the down position again to start the third. Swan got a two-point near fall late to earn a 4-2 win. Shell Lake got forfeit wins at 160 and 195 pounds.

In the night’s other dual, Clear Lake beat Bruce 42-18.

After the early duals, the teams created several exhibition matches for their wrestlers.

Krizan got two matches, earning a 15-0 technical fall over Bruce’s Caleb Wojcik and then getting pinned by Shell Lake’s senior 195-pounder Blake Flach. Person pinned Bruce’s Harold Garcia in the second period and Duellman put up a good fight against Clear Lake defending conference champion and state qualifier Dominic Leintz, losing 4-0.

After completing the regular season with a quad tonight, Thursday, in Frederic that includes the Luck Co-op, Ladysmith and Unity, the Wolfpack will begin WIAA Division 3 post-season competition on Saturday, Jan. 30.

The WIAA released its revised assignments on Friday and is sending Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe to the six-team Phillips regional, where they will join the host Loggers, Bruce, Chequamegon, Ladysmith and Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/ Prairie Farm. The top two wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the sectional meet Feb. 6 at St. Croix Falls. The top two wrestlers in each weight class there will advance to the Division 3 state tournament Feb. 13 at a site to be determined.
