The Auburndale/Marathon wrestling team went undefeated in the Mosinee Quad on Thursday. Auburndale/ Marathon beat both Edgar/Athens and Lakeland Union/Mercer by identical 60-24 scores and also Mosinee, 54-28.

Auburndale/Marathon got off to a quick start against Edgar/Athens in Mosinee with three straight pins to take an 18-0 lead. Freshman Derek Vesely of Marathon pinned sophomore Connor Lewandowski of Athens in three minutes, 51 seconds in the 132-pound bout.

Senior Jared Sweno of Marathon racked up several near fall points to take a commanding 19-3 lead before pinning freshman Corey Schilling at 138 pounds. The Auburndale/ Marathon bench erupted in loud cheers when freshman Jacob Smith of Marathon pinned sophomore Keghan Hartway of Edgar at 145 pounds.

Junior Jesse Jisko of Edgar got the Edgar/Athens squad on the scoreboard by pinning freshman Brett Thiel of Auburndale in their 152-pound bout. Sophomore Chris Kohl of Edgar received a forfeit win at 160 pounds to trim Auburndale/ Marathon’s lead to only 18-12.

Sophomore Hector Pintor of Marathon halted the Edgar/ Athens team’s streak of wins by pinning senior Brady Lemmer in the 170-pound bout. Auburndale senior Cody Poeschel pinned junior Collin Gajewski of Edgar at 182 pounds and sophomore Sloan Welch of Auburndale pinned sophomore Kyler Ellenbecker of Athens at 195. Junior Brice Thiel of Auburndale garnered a forfeit win at 220 pounds.

Senior Waylon Wirkus of Edgar had a huge smile on his face upon greeting his head coach, Andrew Lukasko, after he pinned sophomore Logan Werner of Marathon in the 285-pound bout. Freshman Dylan Dodson of Marathon received a forfeit win at 106 pounds. Junior Brooks Kraus of Athens pinned sophomore Tommy Renard of Marathon in the 113-pound bout. Sophomore Mason Putnam of Marathon was awarded a forfeit win at 120 pounds and junior Noah Altmann of Auburndale also received a forfeit at 126 to end the match.

The Edgar/Athens team beat Mosinee, 42-24, but lost to Lakeland Union/Mercer, 48-12.

Athens, Edgar, Cadott, Marathon, Thorp and Stratford wrestlers will compete in a WIAA Division 3 regional on Saturday, Jan. 30, in Edgar.

Stratford’s wrestling team defeated Phillips, 54-30, and Chequamegon, 66-18, on Thursday in Phillips.

Tiger grapplers who pinned their Loggers’ opponents were Logan Gliniecki against Jesse Bruhn in 33 seconds in the 138-pound bout, Gavin Drexler against Dominick Kurth in 2:21 at 145, Elijah Lucio against James Bruhn in 43 seconds at 152, Jacob Heiden against Ethan Upson in 1:04 at 160 and Jackson Ormond against Parker Anderson in 1:14 at 182.

Stratford wrestlers who pinned their Chequamegon opponents were Logan Gaulke against Jackson Ernst in 2:20 at 126 pounds, Gliniecki against Zeke Franks in 53 seconds at 138, Drexler against Owen Misbauer in 2:13 at 145, Logan Rueth against Dominic Schmidt in 43 seconds at 170 and Ormond against Collin Luhtala in 1:21 at 182.

The sectional is on Saturday, Feb. 6, in St. Croix Falls. Division 3 state team championships are on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Wausau West but the WIAA is still seeking a site to host the Division 3 state individual wrestling tournament.
