Kicking off the new year, the Cornell boys basketball program hosted Cadott Jan. 5, in a non-conference battle. As the home team, the Chiefs looked to own the scoreboard, but that didn’t happen in the first half.

“In the first half, nothing went for us,” said Cornell coach Marcus Leland. “We did not finish shots or clean up the glass very well.”

As a result, Cadott went into halftime, up 26-4. In the second half, determined to shake off a few mistakes and missed opportunities, the Chiefs picked up some energy and started hitting shots.

“It was the tale of two halves for us,” said Leland. “We hit five, three-pointers in the second half, which was nice to see.”

Although Cornell made a comeback, the Hornets continued to score throughout the game and with the large deficit from the first half, Cadott walked away the victors, 48-26.

“Boys played well all game,” said Cadott coach Dusty Burish, adding that his team cut down on turnovers in the second half and scoring was well-rounded. “They are being patient with the ball and taking the opportunities that are given them.”

On Cornell’s side, sophomore Dylan Bowe led the team, with three shots from beyond the arc for 13 points and 4 rebounds, while senior Austin Bowe added 6 points, both of those from three-point land, and 4 rebounds.

Sophomore Dawson Munson chipped in with 2 points, as did freshman Daniel Person and sophomore Blake Anders. Logan Shemick rounded out the scoring, with 1 point.

For Cadott, senior Brad Irwin led the charge, with 20 points, followed by sophomore Tegan Ritter, with 9 points, including a three-point shot. Senior Cole Sopiarz also added a three, finishing with 5 points, while senior Andy Falkenberg also came away with 5 points.

Freshman Nolan Bluhn contributed 4 points and junior Ryan Sonnentag nailed a three-pointer for his 3 points. Freshman Jordan Peters finished the scoring, with 2 points.

Cornell and Cadott’s records are identical, sitting at 2-5 overall and 1-3 in their respective conferences.
