Chieftains split wins in final 2020 games
Playing back-to-back games to close out 2020, the Lake Holcombe boys basketball program traveled out of conference.
Dec. 28 vs. Boyceville non-conference (W 70-45)
It was a great start for Lake Holcombe in the away matchup, as they quickly jumped ahead of Boyceville.
“The boys came out with a hot hand and went up 20-2, to start the game,” said coach Joy Webster. “Dylan (Bowen) started the game four for four, from three-point land.”
The Chieftains went into halftime, up 44-15, and while they gave up 30 points in the second half, the large first-half lead saw them coast to a 70-45 victory.
Senior Kaden Crank played a good inside game and led all scorers, with 22 points. He also pulled down 10 rebounds, for a double-double. The junior Bowen had a solid game, with 18 points, while senior Brock Flater followed with 12 points.
Senior Riley Gingras chipped in with 6 points, and junior Nate Jones, and seniors Tate Sauerwein and Will Kliegle added 4 points each.
Flater led the team with 6 assists, followed by Crank with 5. Crank also had 4 steals, followed by Flater and Gingras, with 3 each.
Dec. 29 vs. Ladysmith non-conference (L 71-54)
“This game was a little different than the night before, in that the shots wouldn’t fall early on,” said Webster of the next night’s match-up.
Trailing by 20 at one point, the Chieftains went on a 12-0 run, to pull within eight, with just five minutes to go in the game.
“At the five-minute mark, it was 58-50 and we were still very much in the game,” said Webster.
Ladysmith pulled away at the last and Lake Holcombe dropped the game, 71-54.
Gingras led for the Chieftains with 20 points, while Flater had another solid game, with 14 points. Crank put up 8 points, Kliegle added 7 and Bowen came away with 5 points.
Flater led the team with 4 assists, while Gingras led the team with 8 rebounds, followed by Kliegle and Bowen with 6 each. Flater led on steals, with 4.
Lake Holcombe’s record sits at 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
“Our boys are putting in solid efforts and I only expect us to get better as the season rolls along,” said Webster. “We are competing with bigger schools and [I] was very happy with their performances this week.”
