Wrestling co-op collects first win by pinning Red Raiders

WOLFPACK WRESTLING
Four pins and a forfeit allowed the Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe/Turtle Lake-Clayton wrestling co-op to secure a 30-12 Lakeland Conference win over Bruce Monday evening in Cornell.
The one-year COVID co-op evened its record at 1-1, again fielding a lineup of five wrestlers for Monday’s meet. All were credited with victories.
“I thought we had a good night,” Wolfpack head coach Greg Sonnentag said. “We were able to get all but one kid from Bruce a match. The boys wrestled well. Every match counts this year. Both Braeden Person and Troy Duellman weighed in heavy to help get our team in good position to get matches and win the dual so kudos to those two for help out.”
Person got the co-op on the board by taking a forfeit. Julian Krizan of Gilman got locked up in a good match with Bruce’s Aaron Lloyd. The two wrestlers were scoreless through one period. Riding Lloyd in the second, Krizan got an opportunity and didn’t waste it. He pinned Lloyd at the 3:04 mark to give the home team a 12-0 lead.
Turtle Lake-Clayton’s Parker Lytle made it 18-0 by pinning Bruce’s James Shrewsberry in 1:08. Bruce got forfeit victories from Austin Lloyd and Rene Martinez before the dual ended with two more wins for the host co-op.
Turtle Lake-Clayton’s Mason Quade earned his second win of the season over Bruce’s Ronan Garcia. Quade got an early takedown and added a couple of twopoint near falls to build a 6-0 lead through one period. He got the pin at 3:29.
Gilman freshman Troy Duellman closed things out against Bruce’s Harold Garcia. He got a takedown and three-point near fall in each of the first two periods to build a 10-0 lead. He got the pin at 4:32.
The teams finished the meet with some exhibition matches to get almost everyone some mat time.
Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe/ Turtle Lake-Clayton will return to competition on Thursday, Jan. 7 by hosting a 6 p.m. triangular in Cornell. The Luck Coop and Chequamegon will be the teams attending.
