Cadott School Board - New year brings new changes
By Ginna Young
School has been back in session for a couple months now, at Cadott, and administration and staff are still working through challenges, and setting goals, while learning how to achieve a positive outcome. Those efforts were reported on at the board of education meeting, Oct. 14.
One of the things mentioned, was at the middle/high school, where students getting a D or an F grade, are monitored each week, by staff.
“We are specifically assigning students with low grades, to seminars, where they can get additional support,” said principal Christi Machler.
Machler and her staff are also trying to identify a few more youth apprenticeship positions, instead of relying solely on technical school.
“Technical school is working great for some kids,” she said, “but for other kids, we need to figure out maybe if we can get them into a youth apprenticeship or something, where they can get more hands-on right away.”
At the elementary, a lot is ongoing, but for their opening month, the goal was to hit 96 percent attendance. They fell short of that mark, with 95.8 percent attendance in September. That number was good, but elementary principal Brad Rogers stills wants to work on increasing it.
“We are still definitely above the state average,” said Rogers.
One good thing, summer school enrollment was up overall.
“We’re hoping to really work on this side of the road (middle/high school) next year,” said district administrator Josh Spaeth. “And I think we can do a lot better yet with that.”
In the business portion of the meeting, the student handbook was approved, showing the “step system” that is a guide to stay consistent across the district. If a student was found to be in possession of drugs or alcohol, or if a scuffle, opposed to an outright fight occurred, staff needs to know how to go forward with disciplinary action.
“We have a procedure now,” said Spaeth. The board also approved the hire of Erin Pilgrim, as the seventh-grade boys basketball coach.
