Lake Holcombe School Board - Knocking out projects, one step at a time

Visitors to Lake Holcombe School can see new things, or touch-ups here and there, but a tour was given to the board of education Sept. 16, to show the full extent of the work done. For one thing, the new gym has seen new bleachers, while the school continues to work on lighting, especially in the high school part of the building, as the light fixtures are from at least the 1970s.
The commons area has also seen a facelift, with new tiles, work on the steps leading to the gym and ceiling tiles.
“Our next goal, probably is ceiling tile in the main halls,” said district administrator Kurt Lindau.
In addition, they’ve replaced the drains that came out on the west side of the building, where huge chunks of ice and rain ran right into the building. The drains were moved to the south, allowing the water to run down the hill.
Also completed, was painting on the outside of the building, all around the gyms and by the front of the building, which was a big project.
“That south side was the worst,” said Lindau. Lindau shared that the projects are just an example why the district asks voters to pass operational referendum, that they can visibly see what benefit is it to the taxpayers.
“It gives us the ability to keep the programs and services in place for our students,” said Lindau. “And that creates opportunities for our students and it allows us to maintain upkeep on our facility.”
Lindau also reported that the new HUDL cameras for sports events were installed in the gym, but when they tried it on the football field, it was inoperative, so it had to be sent back.
It was also discussed that the next board meeting will fall the same night as the annual meeting, Monday, Oct. 28, at 6 p.m.
During the meeting, members approved the hire of middle school Student Council adviser Lisa Leasum; head varsity girls basketball coach Matt Stewart; volunteer assistant boys basketball coach Kyle Johnson; and middle school boys basketball coach Scott Linskey.
They also accepted $1,200, from the Lions club, for minigrants to kindergarten teacher Angie Vacho, ag teacher Kent Dorney and reading specialist Corrine Prince’s classrooms.
