Talbot named Citizen of the Year

No one works as hard at promoting Cornell, or is the biggest historian of that city, than long-time resident Judy Talbot. She served as mayor, for many years, while also acting as president of the Chippewa County Tourism Board.

Talbot’s also taught classes in the after-school programs, and helps organize and run the local farmers market.

“She also has sewn probably every costume that’s ever existed in both schools (Cornell and Lake Holcombe),” said community member Ashley Carothers, who was asked to speak June 16, by mayor Mark Larson. “If you’ve ever seen a kid running around with a cape, she probably made it.”

If it wasn’t already clear, Talbot was selected by Larson, as the 2024 Citizen of the Year, during the Cornell Community Fair. Each year, the mayor awards the honor to an individual who goes above and beyond in their efforts to make Cornell a better place.

Perhaps one of her biggest accomplishments, is recently re-organizing the Cornell Visitors Center, to more prominently display the historical artifacts collected there. With a welcoming smile, and a load of resources and information to take home, Talbot is one of the employees at the center, who makes the place so inviting – and don’t forget to sign the guest book when you stop!

“It’s our hidden gem of Cornell, and I think everyone should be aware of what we have there and what we do down there,” said Talbot.
