It’s not a sport that is very well-known in this area, but one that Jaycee Stephens excels in. Stephens is now in her senior season at Cadott, where she just finished her high school cross country career, with her best time at Sectional competition.

With track still ahead of her this spring, Stephens hopes to repeat a State appearance and she has been an active member in the Chippewa Valley YMCA, on their swim team.

Add all that together and Stephens knew triathlon was what she wanted to do in her collegiate career. The only thing left to do then, was choosing a school.

After narrowing her choices, Stephens committed Nov. 13, to the Division II Colorado Mesa University.

“I would not be the person I am today, without sports,” said Stephens.

When she competes in triathlon, Stephens faces a .47-mile swim, followed by a 12.4-mile bike and finally, a 3.1-mile run.

“This accomplishment is a culmination of the combination of her many years training on the pavement and in the water,” said Cadott athletic director Erin Crank.

While talent plays a big factor in success, behind every athlete, is a coach who helped them get where they are and Stephens’ coaches are no exception.

Pat Rothbauer, Cadott track coach, pointed out that the sports Stephens competes in are usually not given enough credit for their difficulty. However difficult, Stephens shows the ability to finish the races, with a good work ethic and staying goaloriented. Her coaches agreed, that Stephens is dedicated, determined and easily coachable, making her a great resource.

“I believe she’ll be a great addition to any competitive team she joins,” said Rothbauer.

Stephens doesn’t forget the people who help along the way, such as her teammates, coaches, parents and sister, and encourages others to pursue what they want wholeheartedly.

“No matter who you are or where you came from, or what your last name is,” she said, “if you are willing to do what it takes, no dream is too big.”
