Mathematics standards open for public reviews
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is seeking public comment on new draft Wisconsin Standards for Mathematics. The State Superintendent’s Academic Standards Review Council recommended revision to current standards for mathematics and the revision process was subsequently initiated by State Superintendent Carolyn Stanford Taylor.
To develop updated standards, a diverse writing committee representing Wisconsin educators, school leaders and higher education experts was established. The draft mathematics standards are available for public review, and a virtual public hearing will take place from 4-6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9.
An online form for public comment will remain open through Feb. 25, closing at 4 p.m., on that date. Any individual, group or agency in Wisconsin, may submit written comments or information regarding academic standards through the online form.
During the public comment period, the draft standards will be submitted to the Wisconsin State Assembly and Wisconsin State Senate education committees for com- ment. The State Standards Mathematics Writing committee will then review all comments from the public and the state legislature, and incorporate any necessary changes before submitting the standards to the State Superintendent’s Academic Standards Review Council for its recommendations.
The revised standards will then be submitted to the state superintendent for a decision on adoption. In Wisconsin, all state standards serve as a model. Authority to adopt academic standards rests with locally elected school boards.
