Man in UTV falls through weakened ice in Holcombe
Emergency crews were summoned to Lake Holcombe, Jan. 6, to help bystanders rescue a resident who fell through the ice, while riding in his UTV. Jason Steen, 59, was out for a jaunt on the ice, when he unknowingly drove onto a weak area of ice and plunged through.
The UTV landed on an ice shelf and was partially submerged approximately three feet below the surface, with the upper portion of the UTV out of the water. The incident shows that no matter how cold it’s been or how well someone knows the area, no ice is safe and caution should be used on waterways.
As for Steen, he is recovering at home from the ordeal. “He was removed safely and so was the UTV,” said Chippewa County Sheriff Travis Hakes.
