The Edgar Fire Department was dispatched on Sunday afternoon to a barn fire at Sam-Way Dairy located at 115021 Huckleberry Road in the town of Frankfort. Samantha and Wayne Giese own the registered Holstein dairy farm that was established in 2007.
Dave Wagener, Edgar Fire Chief, said the cause of the barn fire is undetermined as of now. He said the barn was fully engulfed in flames when his fire department arrived at the scene. Wagener said only one cow perished in the blaze. The barn is a total loss.
“The barn had plenty of hay and straw inside it to fuel the fire,” he said.
The Athens and Stratford fire departments were automatically called to provide mutual aid to Edgar. Marathon Fire Department brought its tanker. Wagener said firefighters used approximately 140,000 gallons of water to extinguish the barn fire. Edgar Fire Department returned to the fire station at 9:15 p.m. on Sunday.
