County supervisors seek low-cost airline County supervisors seek low-cost airline

The Marathon County Board of Supervisors last week Tuesday approved taking $195,000 from contingency to try and woo a low-cost airline to Central Wisconsin Airport (CWA).

Brian Grefe, CWA director, said the Marathon County funds and $105,000 from Portage County would be used to leverage another $900,000 in federal funds to find another airline that will replace United Airlines, which left CWA due to a worker shortage.

Grefe said he is in discussion with low cost airlines, including Sun Country, in order to take CWA passengers to top destinations, including Florida, Phoenix and Las Vegas.

“I am very optimistic,” he said. “We have a meeting later this month.”

Grefe said the low cost carriers are the only part of the airline industry that is growing at the moment.
