Vandals cause ‘devastating’ damage at Neillsville church

An investigation by the Neillsville Police Department following an act of vandalism at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville last week has led to the arrest of a 42-year-old Lublin man. Felony charges of burglary to a building or dwelling and criminal damage to religious property were filed Tuesday in Clark County Circuit Court against Seth. A Meier. Authorities said a tip led to his arrest.
According to Rev. Varkey V. Joseph, pastor at St. Mary’s, the incident occurred sometime between Thursday night and early Friday morning of last week. While details of the vandalism itself are unknown at this time, he said he and a parishioner discovered the destruction before morning Mass on March 1.
“One of the parishioners had come across it and got me. When I came to see it, we found it was all destroyed,” he said. “It was devastating, painful. Our hearts were broken that this had happened to our church.”
Officers from the Neillsville Police Department were called out to the scene at about 6:48 a.m. Following a tip, the department made an arrest related to the crime and parishioners were informed of the arrest on Saturday afternoon. Charges against Meier were officially filed on Tuesday morning.
