Loyal will have new mayor; other write-ins are needed
The city of Loyal will apparently have a new mayor come spring, as incumbent Dave Williams has decided not to seek a fifth 2-year term. The only candidate for the seat to meet the Jan. 2 candidacy filing deadline was Carmen Englebretson, who ran against Williams for the mayor’s seat in the April 2017 spring election.
Englebretson has represented the city’s Ward 1 on the Loyal City Council for the past 12 years. She won re-election to that seat in 2017 even though she lost the mayoral election to Williams, and she chose to run for mayor again this year after Williams filed a non-candidacy statement. He has been Loyal’s mayor since 2009.
Englebretson will not be a candidate for her current Ward 1 Council seat, and a write-in candidate will be needed to fill it since no one else filed to be on the ballot. Betty Gluch-Voss has filed to run for another term for the other Ward 1 Council seat that is up for election in April.
