Greyhounds grab Loyal’s first-ever state basketball title

Loyal High School Principal Chris Lindner called it “grit,” that undefinable quality the Loyal Greyhounds girls basketball team displayed in coming from behind to win the 2017 WIAA Division 5 state championship. Forevermore in Loyal school athletic history, grit is golden.
Loyal overcame a 13-point second half deficit in the March 11 state title game at the Resch Center in Green Bay to defeat Milwaukee Academy of Science 74-61 for the school’s first-ever gold basketball trophy. In front of a booming hometown crowd in the Resch Center and on the WIAA’s statewide television network, the Greyhounds were unruffled and methodical in erasing the deficit and pulling away in the final minutes to defeat another team that was making its first appearance in a state tournament.
Back in its home gym on Sunday afternoon for a community welcome-home event, the Greyhound players let some of the emotion loose. Tears were common as the coaches and players acknowledged the support of a large fan base that joined the team on its 2-week tournament trail to the state title game.
