Grassland Dairy caught in thick of milk export dilemma

Although Grassland Dairy Products saw a Canadian dairy export problem brewing more than a year ago and worked with state and national officials to try to head it off, the Greenwood industry has nevertheless been caught in the middle of a national discussion regarding a glut of supply on the market and the future of small farmers who may have nowhere to sell their milk.
Word leaked early last week that Grassland Dairy had sent letters to dozens of patrons in Wisconsin to inform them it would no longer take their milk as of May 1. While those producers scrambled to find another processor to buy their product, Grassland officials say they had to cut back on milk intake due to a sudden loss of a major market for one of its products in Canada.
