Five departments battle Monday afternoon house fire near Owen

A fire of yet-unknown origin caused heavy damage to a home Monday afternoon just south of Highway 29 east of Owen. Five area departments -- including Loyal and Greenwood -- sent men and equipment to help contain a blaze that generated excessive heat and billowing clouds of wind-driven smoke.
Owen-Withee-Curtiss Fire Department Chief Jason Thornton said the fire apparently started on the second floor of the home owned by John and Sherry Kohn at N14293 County Road P. The Owen-Withee-Curtiss Fire Department was the first dispatched to the scene, shortly after 1:30 p.m.
“The homeowner noticed the fire,” Thornton said. “They attempted to try to put it out themselves with a couple of fire extinguishers. When we arrived, we had pretty heavy smoke on the second story.”
Thornton called for help from the Central Fire District of Abbotsford-Colby, as well as Thorp, Loyal and Greenwood. With the home heavily engaged in flames, he knew he was going to need as many trucks and men as possible to deliver water and pour it over the house.
