‘My dog is home’

When 2-tour Vietnam veteran David Backstrom first got the idea for a tribute to military dogs and their handlers, he knew there was only one place where it belonged — on The Highground. More than seven years later, his idea has become a tangible memorial to the handler-dog teams who made an impact in saved lives in the jungles of Southeast Asia and other conflicts.
The new military dog tribute was dedicated on The Highground on the afternoon of June 2, with numerous former military dog handlers on hand to see it. One by one they told their stories of working side by side with an animal with whom they could not speak, but who knew each others’ every move.
