Turnovers key Loyal Homecoming rout

Loyal defensive linemen Josh Zupanc and Nick Rueth (65) chase down Assumption quarterback Jacob Sullivan during the Greyhounds’ 41-14 win over the Royals on Sept. 26. The win improved Loyal‘s Cloverwood Conference record to 3-3.

Loyal’s defense made the first big plays of the game and the offense took over from there as the Greyhounds evened their Cloverwood Conference record at 3-3 with a 41-14 Homecoming win over Wisconsin Rapids Assumption on Sept. 26.
Despite coming into the game with only one win, Assumption looked strong in its first drive. Helped along by a roughing-the-passer penalty, the Royals drove into the Greyhound red zone and looked poised to strike first. That changed quickly when Greyhound senior lineman Josh Zupanc scooped up a Royal fumble and carried it back 82 yards for a touchdown. Nick Rueth’s conversion kick put the Hounds up 7-0 with 8:13 to go in the opening quarter.
Assumption returned the following kick-off almost to the exact spot where it had just fumbled, setting up its second red zone possession. The Loyal defense came up big again, stopping a Royal fourth-down run to get the ball back on downs.
