Rockets squeeze out late home win over Greenwood

Although a sixth-inning run ultimately carried the Spencer softball team past an upset-minded Greenwood squad Monday afternoon, it may have been a first-inning defensive play that saved the day for the Rockets. The combination of the early double play that saved two runs and the late rally sparked by Mandie Schultz’s base hit lifted Spencer to the 4-3 win and kept it unbeaten in its quest for another undefeated Eastern Cloverbelt Conference title.
The biggest play of the game may have come early, after Greenwood had led off the game by putting its first two runners on base. Spencer centerfielder Jenna Schober first threw out Kassidy Lamovec trying to score, and after making the tag from her catcher position, Schultz fired to third base where Lindsey Vaughan tagged out the other runner trying to advance. That play loomed much larger yet when Greenwood’s Kristyn Nigon jacked a 2-run homer following the double play.
