Rockets lose Cloverbelt volleyball title match by thinnest of margins

Spencer’s Julia Berres dives to save the ball during the Rockets’ 3-2 match loss to Stanley-Boyd in the Oct. 16 Cloverbelt Conference first-place cross-over game, as Brooke Kettleborough (5) waits to play the carom and Marisa Johnson (foreground) moves in to help. Spencer led 14-13 in the fifth game, but could not score the final point it needed to take the match.

One more point. Seriously. That’s all the Spencer volleyball team needed to score to beat Stanley-Boyd in the deciding game of the 2014 Cloverbelt Conference first-place cross-over match.
With a final kill attempt that caught the net and stayed on its side, Spencer just could not get that last point, and fell 3-2 to Stanley-Boyd on Oct. 16. The loss marked the fourth season in a row that Spencer has lost the league title match in five games. Still, it’s been a season of highs already for the Rockets, with a 7-0 mark and 30 straight Eastern Cloverbelt Conference match wins, and a 33-3 overall match record.
