Rockets go back-to-back with unbeaten ECC titles
The Spencer softball team claimed its second straight undefeated Eastern Cloverbelt Conference championship on May 20 by downing Loyal/Granton in a league schedule-ending double-header in Loyal. The Greyhounds fought all the way to the final out in both games, but Spencer held on for 6-4 and 13-10 wins to run its ECC winning streak to 28 games over three seasons.
“This is the first time we have won back-to-back championships so it is a great accomplishment for the girls,” said Rocket head coach Jason Gorst. “I am very proud of all their hard work and dedication. They are a great group of people and I am thankful for the opportunity to coach them.”
Spencer did drop a pair of non-conference games in the past week to Chippewa Falls McDonell on May 19 and Athens on May 23, but the wins at Loyal last week are the ones that counted. With Gilman’s May 19 loss to Neillsville, Spencer had the league title clinched, but the twinbill sweep over the Greyhounds capped off the second straight unbeaten run. The Rockets are 15-5 overall heading into their first WIAA Division 3 regional game on May 25, against either Auburndale or Loyal/Granton.
