Loyal wins regional title; Assumption looms again

Loyal’s Karsyn Rueth powers to the basket against Marshfield Columbus’ Marissa Immerfall during the Greyhounds’ 63-41 regional final win over the Dons on Feb. 27 in Loyal. Rueth scored 26 points -- including the 1,000th of her varsity career -- to lead Loyal to a second straight regional title and a rematch with Wisconsin Rapids Assumption.

Pardon the Loyal girls basketball team if it’s heard this playoff story before: Win the first two regional games easily, struggle a little early in the regional final, meet Wisconsin Rapids Assumption in a sectional semi-final. The only difference right now is that the Greyhounds still have a chance to rewrite this year’s ending.
So far this post-season, Loyal has followed the exact same script it did in 2015. The Greyhounds blew out Almond/Bancroft and Wild Rose in its first two regional games this year, then needed a strong second half to push aside Marshfield Columbus 63-41 in the regional final. A year ago, Loyal faced an unexpectedly stiff challenge from Abbotsford in the regional title game after two lopsided wins.
And this year, like last year, Loyal now plays Wisconsin Rapids Assumption in a sectional semi-final. That game -- originally to be played in Waupaca -- has been moved by the WIAA to Marshfield Senior High. The game will be Thursday night with a 7 p.m. tip-off.
