Rural Owen man killed in Abbotsford accident

A two-vehicle collision on Hiline Avenue claimed the life of an Owen man Saturday after he ran the stop sign on Pine Street. Dean Swanson's Geo Tracker sustained major damage in the accident.

A rural Owen man was killed Saturday night when the vehicle he was driving failed to stop at the intersection of Pine Street and Hiline Avenue on the western edge of Abbotsford.
Dean L. Swanson, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene after the Geo Tracker he was driving was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado driven by Shannon Underwood, 44. Underwood and his four passengers were transported to the St. Joseph’s Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office received a report of the crash at about 6:50 p.m. Initial investigation indicates Swanson was traveling west on Pine Street and failed to stop at the stop sign. When he pulled out onto Hiline Avenue, his vehicle was struck by Underwood’s southbound vehicle. Underwood was unable to avoid the collision, the sheriff’s department said.
Both vehicles came to rest on their sides in the west ditch.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident, and Swanson was not wearing a seatbelt. Underwood and all the occupants of his truck were wearing their seatbelts.
The Abbotsford, Colby and Dorchester Area fire and ambulance services responded to the scene with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Colby-Abbotsford Police Department and Spirit Ambulance ground units. The investigation is continuing by the Clark County Sheriff’s and Coroner’s Office.
This is the sixth traffic fatality in Clark County for 2016.
