Cats, Raiders, Jays, Tigers all win
Area high school girls basketball teams picked up victories over the past week.
Here’s a recap of the games.
The Edgar Wildcats girls basketball team struggled “putting the ball in the hoop” against Prentice last week Thursday, their coach said, but that didn’t stop the Cats from picking up a 59-48 victory.
Head caoch Betty Urmanski said the Cats’ struggle getting the ball in the hoop was offset by their full-court pressure, intensity and strong defense which forced 27 turnovers by Prentice.
Despite a slow second quarter, the Marathon Red Raiders defeated Assumption in overtime last week Thursday in girls basketball action in Wisconsin Rapids, 54-47, and on Tuesday dominated Pittsville, 70-13.
The Athens girls varsity basketball team had no issues handling Rib Lake last week Thursday on their senior night. The Jays held the Redmen to single-digit scoring in each of the four quarters to roll out a 57-16 win.
The Jays jumped out early with a 16-5 lead by the end of the first quarter. Athens’ pressure in the back court kept Rib Lake rattled and the Redmen were unable to get any sort of offense rolling in the second quarter while Athens extended its lead to 21.
Returning from halftime with a score of 29-8, Athens allowed Rib Lake just two points in the third stanza while putting in 10 more and closed out the game with an 18-6 final quarter.
The Stratford High School girls basketball team downed Northland Lutheran last week Thursday, 50-21, and on Tuesday defeated Newman, 66-43.
