Bluejays down Rib Lake in overtime win
Despite trailing by three at halftime, the Athens Bluejays defeated Rib Lake last week Friday in overtime, fueled by a staggering 33 points by Tony Thurs.
Rib Lake was up by one after the first quarter, then held a 23-20 lead at halftime. Athens put up 19 points in the third to take a four-point lead, holding Rib Lake to just 12, but the Redmen scored 21 points in the final stanza, which resulted in a tie at the end of regulation at 56 points for each team.
The Bluejays were able to get the slight advantage as the extra period ran out and took the 67-65 overtime win.
Tony Thurs lit up the court with his 33 points and finished the night with a double-double as he pulled down 12 rebounds as well.
Teammates Collin Ellenbecker and Austin Schreiner each put in nine points while Lane Tessmer and Aaron Wickman added eight points each.
Wickman had seven rebounds while Ellenbecker led with six assists and Schreiner had five. Ellenbecker and Thurs had two steals each.
On Tuesday the Bluejays were narrowly defeated by Newman, 51-50.
The Cardinals held the advantage, 13-8, after the first quarter. By halftime the Jays had closed that gap to just two points, 23-21. The teams battled through the third, but Newman gained the edge and put themselves up by five going into the final stanza. Athens continued to battle and closed the gap, leading as the clock wound down, but the Cardinals nailed a shot with just two seconds left on the clock to take the win.
Tessmer led the team with 12 points while Thurs added 11. Ellenbecker scored nine, Schreiner put in seven and Wickman had six. Justin Kelly rounded out the scoring with five points.
Thurs led the team with 13 rebounds while Tessmer had four assists.
