Al and Mary Williams announce retirement, Happy Joe’s to close

After nearly 39 years in the restaurant business in Medford, Al and Mary Williams are looking forward to retirement.
The couple have announced plans to close the Happy Joe’s Pizza and Ice Cream Parlor on Sunday, April 9. The restaurant has been a popular destination for area residents and visitors for many years. Those people who have outstanding gift certificates need to redeem them by that date.
Mary Williams recalls 39 years ago, being pregnant with their daughter and being up on the scaffolding helping her husband install the brick-work on what was then a new Burger Chef restaurant. The Williams went on to open the Hardee’s in Medford as well as Hardee’s in Ladysmith, Neillsville and Mosinee. The couple has been active in the community, serving on the committees for numerous organization and events as well as serving in elected office at the city, county and state level. Mary Williams represented the 87th Assembly District in the state legislature for 12 years and is still active on state committees.
Over the past several years the Williams have been gradually backing out of the industry selling their restaurants until now they only own and run Happy Joe’s in Medford. They had been looking for a buyer for the restaurant for some time.
