John Joseph Englert

John Joseph Englert, 83, was called home by our Lord Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, and his passing was a blessing and a gift to all those who loved him.

John was the only son of Joseph William and Louise Mary (Dube) Englert, born July 23, 1933, in Bristol, Conn.

John served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany, when he met the love of his life, Rosa Veronica Bachmann. They married March 12, 1955, and together, raised four children in Bristol, Conn.

John was a tool and die maker, and worked at New Departure Hyatt for General Motors until his retirement in 1991.

He was a longtime, active member of the German (Turn Verein) Club, Bristol Fish & Game, and the American Legion. John and Rosa loved their family, and spent many weekends playing cards, grilling, and simply having a good time with family and friends.

John and Rosa spent their golden years first at their home along Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island, then moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., to join their lifelong friends, Joan and Butch Manasse.

They loved to travel and had many adventures in Aruba, Alaska and visiting Rosa’s family in Germany.

John had a passion for the outdoors and loved all animals. Much to the chagrin of his family, John was an “animal whisperer,” calling turkeys, luring antelope and “attempting” to direct traffic for a herd of bison crossing the road. He was our “Marlin Perkins” of the animal kingdom.

He is survived by his eldest son – Charles; eldest daughter – Doris Blackledge (husband Russ), and granddaughters – Katie and Jess; son – Gary (wife Pat), and grandsons – Mike (wife Sam), Terry and Jeff; daughter – Debbie Alderman (husband Bob), and granddaughter – Emily; his sister – Joyce Englert; brother-in-law – Herman Rothenbuecher; sisters-in-law – Ida Betz (husband Hans) and Wilma Bachmann (husband Erwin); and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins in Germany, and in the United States.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years – Rosa; his parents – Joseph and Louise; a granddaughter – Michelle Englert; his wife’s parents – Michael and Augusta (Elbert) Bachmann; brothers-in-law – Otto and Henry Bachmann; and sister-in-law – Elizabeth Rothenbuecher.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, March 9, at 6 p.m., at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Cadott, with Father William Felix officiating. A celebration of life service will take place at First Congregational Church in Bristol, Conn., March 25, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Kristen Kleinman officiating.

John’s family is grateful for the compassionate staff at Lake Hallie Memory Care, and the Clark County Rehabilitation and Living Center in Owen, where he resided his last years.

Those unable to attend are invited to share memories and condolences with the family by visiting the John J. Englert memorial on the Leiser Funeral Home’s website at The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent to: Foundation of SJH-Hospice, In Memory of John J.
