JoAnn Flater

JoAnn Flater, 81, Holcombe, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2017, at her home on the Chippewa River.

JoAnn was born Feb. 18, 1936, in Ladysmith, to Harlow and Edna Mae (Arndt) Klund.

JoAnn spent much of her childhood between Bloomer and her grandparents’ resort (Klund’s Resort) on Pulaski Lake in Bruce. Her family moved there in 1946, and took over the business.

She graduated from Bruce High School in 1954. She met Harold “Tubby” Flater and they were united in marriage June 14, 1954 (Flag Day), at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

They took over and operated Flater’s Resort until 1987, when their son, Joe, took over the operation. JoAnn and Tubby continued to operate the campground and trailer park for the years following.

JoAnn and Tubby spent 30-plus winters in Texas, with their many “winter Texan” friends. She and Tubby spent many hours golfing and fishing at their sea cottage. They enjoyed entertaining, and taking friends and family out in their boat to see the dolphins.

JoAnn’s passion was genealogy and our local history.

She is survived by her husband – Tubby; her loving children – Jim (Paula) Flater, Holcombe, Joe (Dawn) Flater, Holcombe, and Jane (Dan) Joy, Peshtigo; honorary son – Steve Folgate, Holcombe; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; her brothers – Monte (Char) Klund, Holcombe, and Fritz (Deb) Klund, Bruce; brother-in-law – Harry Speigel, Cadott; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister – Marilyn Speigel.

A Christian funeral will be held Friday, March 10, at 5 p.m., at St. Francis Church, (Flambeau) Holcombe. Visitation at the church will begin at 3 p.m.

Deacon Craig Voldberg will officiate. Burial will be at the Flambeau Cemetery.

There will be a memorial service/celebration of life gathering Saturday, April 29, at 2 p.m., at Flater’s Resort at the junction of the Chippewa and Flambeau rivers (The Point), with food and drinks following.

In lieu of flowers, family requests that memorials be sent to the Chippewa County Historical Society Capital Campaign Fund.
