Backpacks fill need for weekend meals

WEEKEND MEALS –– For just under $2, someone can donate a weekend meal to an area student who may not have access to food, with Cadott’s Backpack Buddies and Cornell’s Kidpacks. Kathy Wilk, Cornell Food Pantry volunteer, says the pantry accepts monetary and non-perishable donations, such as Slim Jims, macaroni and cheese, and canned soups, while in Cadott, donations can be made by contacting the school. Starting in mid-September, area schools, along with the Cornell Food Pantry and Cadott’s Come Now and Eat program, will provide weekend meals for students in need.

“It is hard to imagine that for some school-aged children, the noon meal on Friday is the last meal they are sure of until they return to school on Monday,” said Donna Albarado, spokesperson for Cadott Backpack Buddies.

Available to any grade, Backpack Buddies operates through the Come Now and Eat Community Table meal – a free meal served the fourth Wednesday of every month at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cadott. Donations received from those meals, along with funding from area organizations, such as Big Drywood Lutheran Church, Cadott Lions Club, Thrivent, Cadott School staff and the Monster Mash event, purchase the food for the backpacks.
